Project Development - Shared Universe

What is a "Shared Universe"?

There is a current trend within film and television that studios are demanding film-makers and writer utilise. The principle behind constructing a shared universe within certain film and television  properties to infuse their worlds under one interconnected cinematic universe.

By using a shared universe, audience can then give in to the ideas of a surreal world where familiar characters can engage with other characters within the same film. Studios such as marvel,DC comics and blumhouse productions are all studios that have used this tool.

Why include a shared universe?

There is a purpose as to why I want to incorporate this technic in my short film. The reason for this decision is to include my media product into a larger cinematic world, where characters from existing products as well as future media products can crossover and co-exist in the same world. The benefits of having my product apart of a shared universe is that it can potentially further immerse audiences in the story as they feel apart of a larger spectacle. This idea not only would benefit the audience but as well as the creative team behind the products. Film-makers and writers have the unique opportunity to mix character and stories between connected films; offering the chance for then convey the impact certain characters or particular events may have in a far larger scale and from an alternative perspective.

How will you create a shared universe?

As for how I intend on creating a shared universe within my short film, this ultimately lies on what idea I choose to go forward for my short-film. However I do in fact have some ideas as to how I may achieve this ambitious plan to create a shared universe.

  1. The Downfall
"The Downfall" is a media product that I wrote and directed as a short-film about crime.I believe that this short-film contains great opportunities within the story to connect various characters of this film to whom are involved in my "Untitled A2 Project". The shared universe would consist of elements of "The Downfall" existing within   the story of "Untitled A2 Project". However this shared universe with "The Downfall" would rely on the actors of "The Downfall" to reprise their roles or they cannot perform within the "Untitled A2 Project" as this would break continuity.

2. A2 Project by another media student

This would be a brilliant opportunity to elaborate on the principle of a shared universe; being that various film-makers and writers can utilise characters to crossover with one another. By creating a shared universe with media products belonging to other media students, we can utilise events from either stories to further impact the surreal reality existing within our cinematic world. The only flaw in this option, is that the film-makers from both products must have a mutual agreement as to how it is all executed.

Final Verdict

I hope to include a shared universe within my short-film, but this decision rest solely one what of film it ends up beings as that will dictate how I intend on creating a shared cinematic universe.
