The Polar Express - Poster (Analysed)

The poster for "The Polar Express" uses selective images from the product, ultimately to convey a particular idea as to what the audience can expect both visually and tonally. The viewer base these ideas from what they can interpret from the various signs represented within the poster.

Within the poster, the creative team behind this promotional material has included an extensive amount of snow within the image. Snow heavily acting as an indexical sign for Christmas; signifying a time of joy and wonder. This is all acting as evidence towards the tone and theme of the media product that it takes place round the Christmas holiday, implying that the story's tone is magical.

The poster does a interesting attempt at teasing what viewers can expect from the story. By including a train within the poster a symbolic sign for a journey, a boy is can also be seen placed looking up at the train suggesting to viewers that he is the protagonist of the story and in which we will see the story through his perspective.

A way in which the poster has also connoted the scope of the story is by placing the boy viewing the train from a low angle; emphasising the size of the train and making it appear significantly larger. This conveys that the journey that the boy will embrace aboard this train will surely be grand in scope.

Location Scouting (Basement) - Idea no.2

This is an actual basement for a mansion that is associated with my father's work. Not only is this location perfect for capturing the environment that I have envisioned but it I will also be able to easily gain permission to film within this unit. Throughout my assessment of the location I recognised that there are a limited access to power sockets, meaning that an extension cable will be needed for the lighting gear needed on set. In regards to safety, shoes must be worn at all time as there are sharp object scattered across the floor, meaning that areas where the actor will be sitting or laying will have to be inspected before shooting. One factor that is both a pro and con is the space; it is very small, providing the film with a claustrophobic essence to the story. However this will mean that I will need a crew of just 3 people in order to work efficiently; height is also an issue as the ceiling is fairly low for tall people which will make time shooting in the basement fairly uncomfortable.

I have ultimately decided to shoot the basement sequence of my project within this location as it meets all of the visual factors needed to achieve my vision as well as meets a fair standard regarding health and safety. In order to ensure that my crew and I are well during shooting, I will allocate 15 mins breaks after every hour of work.

2nd Script Draft - Miss Piggot's Feedback

Recently my second media teacher has read the current draft of the script. She is overall very satisfied with the narrative and direction of the film; however she has addressed many queries regarding the character 'Max' and the way I have chosen to present him. The most significant piece of feedback that I received from Miss Piggot is that she can envision Max as a young man in his mid 20s, by incorporating the idea of Max being a school student she found the story to be less impactful and cliché. Advising me to change the school setting to more of a office workspace and make the characters older.

The rest of her feedback regarding my script was geared heavily towards the the editing of the film as she suggested alternative shot and pacing choices.

All of Miss Piggot's feedback will be addressed in the later drafts of the script as I continue to work on improving the quality of the story in order to strengthen the impact the audience will have on "A Lost Soul"

Location Scouting (Basement) - Idea no.1

This is a location that would be used as the main area for the basement within the story. Despite it having that rundown and depressive quality I was looking for, it would be difficult to present this location as a basement as there too many complications regarding this location. There are far too many windows letting in uncontrollable amounts on light into the room; affecting the idea of a dark basement isolated from the world. Another major implication are the numerous safety hazards as there are loose bulbs hanging from the ceiling as well as sharp objects scattered across the floor.

Location number one is not the definite location for the basement scene as it doesn't entirely incorporate my vision but most important can put my cast and crew safety at risk.

Location Scouting (Office)

This is the location that I will be using to shoot a sequence in the film that requires the characters to be in a working environment. I have decided on this location as it fits my vision because it will provide a mature and professional aesthetic regarding the mise en scene within my project.

I have been granted permission by the staff of this facility to film here. However there are some points that I must address, this is a functioning office with important documents and statements held by the staff; I must ensure that nothing is misplaced or damaged.

I have only permission to shoot only during a Sunday as that is the only time the unit will be available for me to use. I must ensure that I am well prepared to get my footage within the limited time that I have within the compound.

2nd Script Draft - Mr Michie's Feedback

I have received feedback from one of my media teachers regarding the latest draft of my script. Mr Michie has stated that he is overall satisfied with the overall story and narrative. However , the aspects of my script that needs work on length of the story; this was expected as I have written more just for creative purposes. This will help me then identify what needs to be trimmed out in order to meet the criteria of 5 minutes. As well as the structure of the script, Mr Michie has also corrected some of the lines in order to help the dialogue flow better. The main comment made by Mr Michie surrounding the script was about involving school students; Mr Michie suggested that this is too cliche as most ideas involved with bullying present it within a educational setting. He also believes that it lowers the production value of the project, he recommends incorporating the idea within a business environment in order to represent an alternative approach to bullying.

Overall the script is developing very well and I am happy with the response my script is receiving. I will be re-working the script to incorporate Mr Michie's ideas and feedback in order to strengthen the quality of my overall media product.

Production Update!

As for where my project currently is in pre-production, I am progressing through smoothly as my research is nearly there. However in direct relation to "A Lost Soul" there are a list of objectives I must do before I begin principle photography.

To Do List

  • Location Scout
  • Prop List
  • Shot List
  • Storyboard and Animatic
  • Test Footage on push-pull shot & Slow motion.
  • Finalise the script

These are ultimately what I need to do in order to be fully prepared to shoot my short-film my aim is by the end of this week to have them all done and ready to shoot by the October half term.

The evolution of the thriller genre

This video is about of my secondary research that explains how the thriller genre has evolved over the century since it's birth; informing us on the principle formula a the thriller which are suspense, tension and anxiety.

The video has emphasised on how many film-makers have incorporated this formula in various films of there own. An interesting thing that this video addresses is in the genre's evolution over the years as new sub-genres are formed and film-makers find new or different ways to thrill their audience.

Overall I have found this video extremely insightful as is gives me an insight regards what I must do with "A Lost Soul" to ensure that it fits within the genre and following the key formula by creating suspense, tension and anxiety to my audience.

PUSH-PULL SHOT: WIDE SHOT OF MAX KNEELING DOWN TO THE FLOOR.
As Max is seen kneeling down in complete sorrow, behind him a ghostly figure emerges from the corner.
DIP TO BLACK.
    THE END.

Summary

I've completed the 2nd draft of the script which had the entire vision as to what I want from the story including the particular shot types I want to shoot for specific moments.

In order to gain some initial feedback on my work, I gave it to a number of friends and family in order to give new opinion on the script. Their overall thoughts were pleasingly positive, they enjoyed the story and found it quite tense and jawing; which was the reaction I was hoping for. However they did point our various grammatical errors and lines of dialogue throughout the draft that I certainly must fix.

From the feedback I also thought about adding additional scenes to add more character development; particularly towards the opening of the film. This is an idea I'm considering and may lead to a director's cut of "A Lost Soul"

Thriller Genre - Iconography and Sounds

In order to ensure that my short-film has incorporated to relevant codes and conventions within it's story, I have done some research as to what types of iconography and sounds are generally associated with the thriller genre.

This video gave me an insight as to what types of sounds and visual symbols I should include in my story. Ultimately what I realised it that they all help to create an unsettling vibe as the sounds and visuals help present a chilling and tense atmosphere amongst the audience; this is something I plan on emulating within my short-film by using sinister sound effects that relevant to the night and the cold whether; as this will help to bring a chilling sensation to the audience as they can infer these sounds to a cold lonely night.
