Real Gone - Short Film (Analysed)

As apart of my research I'm analysing a media product relevant to "A Lost Soul". I have selected 'Real Gone' a short-film that I will analyse throughout the duration of this part of my research. In my analysis I will state the various technical and narrative aspects that I as a film-maker would learn from in order to help my ability to tell a cohesive story.

This is a short-film about a man who had a brief glimpse into the great beyond after being involved in an fatal accident being brought back from the great beyond, Elwood Holler has given up on life. No matter how hard he tries, he will try to enter the afterlife.

Director 'Seth Worley' took the ideology behind committing suicide as a interesting opportunity to infuse dark humor into his story, throughout the story we witness our lead character perform countless attempts to kill himself and through the way it's directed, edited and performed offers the numerous attempt to be highly comedic.

As the story progresses, the audience learn that there is a greater meaning behind the film. The meaning behind the our lives may not seem meaningful to us but may have a meaningful impact on others. This factor has a major impact on the audience as it allows them an opportunity to reflect on their views on life whilst having a enjoyable time reflecting on these deep and thought provoking concepts whilst finding the humor in such dark and bleak situations.

In regards to audience theories, this short-film pays brief mention to the two-step theory as the media product has information within it that different members of the audience will take away from the product as it will vary on a range of factors such as their opinions and perspective as well as their interpretation on the messages being said with the narrative of the product.

'Real Gone' is a prime influence on how I intend on executing my own short-film as the media product will remain a major influence on both the narrative and visual aspect of my media product.

Within the mise en scene of "Real Gone" it incorporates a lot of bland locations; an example is the motel room which the main subject stays in is very basic and dull which is expressed through the director's decision to include simple household items including the an old television and dull coloured paint for the walls. All of these factors within the mise en scene help infuse a sense of depression that the character is expressing as well conveying his lack of interest in the beauty of living.

A major factor as to way I'm inspired by this short is primarily due to director 'Seth Worley' as he achieves sequences in his film through cheap and practical ways. Despite most short-films practically being dependant of DIY film-making, Seth Worley creatively utilises things around him to enhance the telling of this story. An example of this is when the main subject gets hit by the firetruck; this scene was shot without a real firetruck but instead with a photo of a firetruck. Through clever editing and sound effects , Seth Worley was able to convince his audience that they saw a real firetruck, ultimately inspiring me as a film-maker because Seth Worley demonstrated that you can still achieve your cinematic vision without a budget; as long as you have imagination.
