Signs - Short Film (Analysed)

"Signs" is a beautiful short film that deals with our society has fixed perceptions and expectations around; love, careers, happiness and adulthood. The film's narrative is driven by a man living life in the city with a office job, dealing with the challenges of not only doing well at his job but finding happiness as he is a single man surrounded by love as that is all he seems to want more than anything; this film highlights this phenomenally through its use of blocking and cinematography as the lead 'Jason' is framed mostly on his own surrounded by blank space or surround by elements of love whether that is women or lovers. Jason seems to seek out love because of his conflict with his inability to fit in at work, as the film re-enforces how much of an outcast he is as he never engages within anyone throughout the entire story.

This film was innovative as it asks the characters to utilise body language and written signs as a form of not only communicating with each other but to the audience as well, expressing their emotions physically. A refreshing way to see communication particularly with social media acting as a almost fixed way to communicate with one anyone. "Signs" emphasises on the organic and intimate connection gained when communicating with one another in person.

Overall "Signs" was an impressive short film that creatively embodied how our society perceives relationships and the way expectations can create distance between the individual and those around them as they lack the ability to focus on anything but what people think.
